For those who are not familiar with the term, “flipbook” there may be numerous suggestion of what it entails that comes to your mind. For the laymen among us, it may evoke images that refer to the generic term of flipbook, which is a book with illustrations that when flipped through at a certain pace provides a “moving” image. This was the manner in which many cartoons were produced in the early years. For example, if one were to draw a child in the action of running, making small changes in the pages and enabling the quick turn of the pages, provides one the impression of a running child. However, in the digi savvy world, the most likely reference the word flipbook would be making will be to the highly versatile; easy to use the word “flipbook”, although similar to that of its generic term, refers to a different product concept in this digital age.

So, what is a flipbook?

A flipbook is the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed magazine or catalog. This cool tool allows simulating the experience of flipping through pages which generally happens in the conventional reading process to be replicated in the digital reading experience as well.

Many use the PDF or Portable Document Format, to deliver content to readers. It was easy and effective. The PDF method was easy as it enabled the user to store large contents of information in a relatively small area within the computer. Until recently, all manner of writing and illustrations have been stored in PDF form. As with any item, the PDF format too has its drawbacks. These included the boring pages the information is written on, the difficulty in updating and editing information, as well as, the inability to use PDF without Adobe Reader installation. The good news is that now, all forms or publications in PDF format can be converted into a high quality flipbook. It is right to claim that the flipbook takes reading and perusing digital media to a whole new level.

Features of a Flipbook

This feature makes reading all manner of material a very interactive experience. For example, an avid reader no longer has to scroll down, as with PDF, to get to the next page. Instead, he or she is able to simulate the turning of the pages of the file he is reading as when doing so on a real book or magazine. There are various means of navigation that include dragging the mouse, the mouse wheel and pressing on the page turn buttons etc. The slideshow option enables the automatic flipping of the pages, the zoom option enables readers, larger or smaller letters or animations and illustrations. The full screen option enables browser and tool bars to disappear while enabling a better perusing experience. Plus, this feature enables readers to enjoy audio and visuals at the same time providing an interesting and enjoyable reading experience.

What is great is that all PDF documents can be converted into the flipbook version. The World Wide Web is plethora of information when it comes to learning something new. Therefore, converting PDF into an enjoyable and easy to read experience is also a not so difficult task anymore. There are online sites which offer the service and some great software that is available for the purpose.

Benefits of Flipbooks

As in adopting any new concept, we need to consider the pros and cons of new technologies and the same applies to the flipbook. This feature provides users with many advantages. Some of these include low cost. Magazines and books can be extremely costly as printing and material costs can be very high. However, this is not so with flipbooks. There are no material, printing and shipping costs to contend with. There is only a single conversion rate making this feature extremely advantageous to readers. This feature also enables a multitude of persons to enjoy various content through hi-tech multimedia, with graphic designs and colourful, eye-catching print while enabling various advertising opportunities too. In addition, flipbooks also enables others access to unlimited content worldwide. One does not have to be connected to Wi-Fi to take advantage of the facilities of the flipbooks as this feature enables readers to be accessible even without Wi-Fi. Most importantly, flipbooks are extremely “green” and make a huge positive impact on the environment.

Flipbooks have been gaining popularity for a number of years and it is increasing in a high proportion. Although the word “flipbook” will bring about the old image of turning a page at a fast pace, this is much more than that. Flipbooks are taking the world by storm and it is time to take advantage of this superb feature.
